My name is Bridín Moloney and I am delighted to have been nominated as the new Labour Party Local Area Representative for the New Ross District. I grew up just outside the town of New Ross, attending both primary and secondary school in the town. I moved back to Cushinstown 5 years ago after spending some years attending university, travelling and living in both Dublin and Kildare. I am married to Cian and we have 3 wonderful young boys aged 7 and under.
Following my degree in 1997 I worked in bars in both Dublin and San Francisco for a number of years but for the past 10 years I have been working in the Adult Education sector as a tutor. In 2013 I returned to university to complete my H.Dip. in Adult Education and I am presently working for Waterford/Wexford Education Training Board as a Resource Person in Community Education, BTEI and ESOL. In my personal life I enjoy current affairs, reading and am currently learning how to swim (very badly!!)
While I have always had an interest in current affairs, it wasn’t until the marriage referendum of 2015 that I decided to get involved in politics. The referendum made me aware of the need for people to act, to speak out about what they believe in and to stand up for the inequalities in our political system. I found the experience of campaigning for an issue close to my heart to be invigorating and so I decided to get more involved and join a party. I decided to join the Labour Party as I believe in its ethos of equality, inclusiveness and social democracy.
I have always gotten involved in community projects in every area that I lived. While living in America I volunteered with Planned Parenthood where we lobbied the California Congress for better rights and support for women’s reproductive health. After moving home to Dublin I volunteered as a tutor with unaccompanied migrants to help them in their learning of the English language. I lived for a time in Sallins, Co. Kildare and while there I was an active member of the Sallins Festival Committee. Since I moved home to Cushinstown and my first child started school I have been on the Parents’ Association of Cushinstown NS, serving as secretary for the past two years. I have also recently joined the Board of Management of Wexford Women’s Refuge.
While I am very new to politics I am passionate about how local government can facilitate change in the community, I am passionate about the quality of education that we are receiving, and giving, in this country, from early childhood to adult education. I am a true believer in life-long learning and I believe that government must support teachers and learners alike to fulfil their potential. I am very interested in the issue of childcare and how the high cost of childcare is affecting some parents’ (especially women’s) choices of work. I believe that we also need to pay our childcare workers a living wage.
I have decided to get involved in politics now because I believe we need committed people at local level to encourage individuals and local groups to work together to improve the quality of life for themselves, their families and their local area.
Please feel free to contact me about any issues or concerns you may have and I'll do my very best to help you.
