Joe was first elected to Wexford Borough Council in 2004, re-elected in 2009. A former Mayor of Wexford he has also served as Deputy Mayor of Wexford Town for 2007-08. Joe served as a member of Co. Wexford VEC and served as the Vice Chairperson of the VEC and chairperson of the VEC Audit Committee. From July 1 Co Wexford VEC will be amalgamted into South East Education & Training Board. Joe represented the VEC on the board of Wexford Vocational School. He was also a member of the Environment Committee of Wexford Borough Council. Joe was a member of Wexford Harbour Commissioners until its abolition in 2010. Joe spearheaded the campaign to retain the South Wexford Railway and is also a member of the Wexford in Bloom Committee.
I am Local Area Representative for Labour in Wexford District. Wexford District includes Wexford Town and environs, Piercestown, Murrintown, Castlebridge, Rosslare, Kilmore Quay and Bridgetown. The district has a population of about 40,000 and elects 10 councillors including my colleague Cllr George Lawlor.
Joe is also a member of the ASTI and was the founding chairperson of both his local residents association and the Wexford Branch of the educational lobby group TLC.
