Prior to his election Galway City Council in 2009, Niall's commitment to his community was evident through his involvement with innovative initiatives such as Sports Aid and Music Aid - (redistributing old and unused sporting and musical goods to schools and groups in the community) as co-founder and committee member of Space Invaders - using empty retail units to support artists in Galway and as founder of Green Nose Day in aid of people with disabilities. In recognition of his sterling work he was awarded Junior Chamber Ireland Young person of the year award for volunteer/ humanitarian work and the Vodaphone Passion For the World award.
Niall and his wife Aideen run their own business, Claddagh and Celtic Jewellery Co. and understands the difficulties being experienced by small business in these difficult times. He also has first hand knowledge of how important it is to increase tourism in the West and also to work with the student population of the city. To date, Niall has highlighted issues such as lack of community facilities particularly in areas such as Knocknacarra where there is no community centre, post office and no where for young people to hang out such as a youth cafe. He believes that for too long houses and apartments have been built with no facilities put in place for the area and that the planning process needs to be addressed, with positive solutions.
Niall firmly believes that in the past, the City Council has wasted money it was supposed to spend in helping the city grow. Issues such as Eyre Square, the water crisis; South Park, private vs public waste collections, have all have led to poor communications from city hall and the people of Galway feeling they have been short changed. Niall seeks to instill openess and transparency in Council actions, foster confidence in our City by devising a transport plan for the demands of the future with a development of the Gluas, Park and Ride for the west side of the city being a priority.
Niall describes himself as "hard working, innovative, positive local representative and considers the opportunity to serve on Galway City Council as a great honour not to be forgotten.
